When it’s said that an application like EMS is being “hosted,” or running “in the cloud,” it can mean many things.

For Example:

• Customer’s copy of the software is loaded locally; their database is on a remote server
• Customer’s copy of the software and their database are on a remote server
• Multiple customers run a shared copy of the software against their own unique database, both residing on a remote server
• Multiple customers run a shared copy of the software against a single generic database, both residing on a remote server (an arrangement often referred to as SaaS – Software as a Service)

These are just a few of the options. When you bring in the added factor of who (customer, hosting provider) will be responsible for installing, maintaining and upgrading the software and database, you come up with a wide variety of scenarios.

Even before “cloud computing” became an industry buzzword, EMS customers were utilizing off-site server space to optimize their operations.
